Whirlaway’s design brief was very clear: “To enhance performance under sail without compromising the high standard of comfort and luxury on board.”
The righting moment was enhanced by fitting a deeper keel and a spade rudder. To further improve upwind performance, the keel contains a 1.6 m (5 ft) hydraulically operated dagger board. The racing capacities are maximised by the use of this dagger board and the streamlined hull shape designed by Dubois Naval Architects. Meanwhile, the increased righting moment allowed for a taller rig with 10% more sail area.
Substantial weight sailing was achieved by constructing the interior from specially designed and built lightweight panels whilst still retaining full soundproofing. Thermal and acoustic insulation was added as necessary but with weight saving in mind, improved forms of insulation were sourced and fitted wherever possible.
