Project Zero emerges from construction hall

She stands both as a testament to what happens when visionaries ask ‘what if…’, and as a reference for renewable energy. Her aim is to show what’s possible, to inspire a change in mindset across the superyacht sector and the wider maritime industry, and to encourage others to use and develop her technical solutions.

Those solutions — from her breathing masts to her 250 kW hydrogeneration system; from her innovative micro-grid to her advanced hybrid photovoltaic-thermal panels; and from her custom suite of control software to her approach to energy storage, management, and efficiency — are not just pioneering. They are also being shared via an open-source platform to ensure others can explore, adopt, adapt and refine her technologies for other projects.

Zero started with the seed of an idea in 2019 and — with project partners Vripack for her exterior and interior design, Dykstra Naval Architects for her hull shape, sailplan and thruster design, and Vitters Shipyard for her build — over the following four years she began to take shape.

Construction started in 2023 at Jacht- en Scheepswerf Gouwerok where her aluminium hull was crafted before it was transferred by barge to the Vitters Shipyard in Zwartsluis where outfitting began, supported by a diverse group of subcontractors and technology partners. Mirroring her early journey, Zero emerged from her construction hall on 6 July 2026 and was transferred by barge to Harlingen for her technical launch and the stepping of her Panamax-height masts.

The intense work of the intervening three years is evident in the beauty of her Palma Blue hull and in her sleek decks adorned with teak-alternative Tesumo. Her graceful and elegant form, recalling the golden age of sail blended with modern details such as her contemporary styled dorades, was developed with purpose beyond just looks — she proves that embracing renewables and eschewing fossil fuels does not mean settling for utilitarian styling nor cumbersome and unsightly technology.

Her launch, however, does not signify the end of the project, but rather the beginning. She will now embark on an extensive and intensive sea trial period where her systems will be tested and validated, and initial data gathered.

The data from her systems — alongside research insights, software code, and system design schematics — are being publicly shared via the non-profit, open source Foundationº platform at foundationzero.org. Foundationº was given exclusive access to the project to highlight and share its technologies. It has covered the project in depth but is unrelated to the build and has no ownership stake in the vessel.
